Team Lead Staff Accountant
BALANCIFY About Us We are a Canadian accounting firm serving small and mid-sized businesses across Canada with bookkeeping, GST/HST, payroll, and year-end compliance. We run a modern, cloud-first practice built on QuickBooks Online and a tight stack of supporting tools. As our India team grows, we are hiring a Team Lead to anchor a small group of staff accountants, own the quality of their work, and act as the bridge between the team in India and our Canadian leadership. This is a player-coach role — you will continue to do client work yourself, but you will also be responsible for the output and growth of the people on your team. Why This Role Real ownership. You will own the quality and timeliness of a portfolio of Canadian client work and the people who deliver it. Build the team. You will help hire, train, and develop staff accountants. As we grow, your team grows with you. Direct line to Canadian leadership. You will work closely with our Canadian CPAs and partners — not through layers of management. Career path to Manager. Strong performers progress to Manager and senior leadership roles within the firm. Modern practice. We use QuickBooks Online, Dext, Plooto, and similar tools. We automate what should be automated and invest in good systems. What You'll Do Manage a small team of staff accountants and bookkeepers — typically 3 to 6 people. Review their work for accuracy, completeness, and quality before it goes to Canadian CPAs or clients. Set and track deadlines across multiple clients and team members. Make sure nothing slips. Coach and develop the team. Give clear feedback. Train new hires on Canadian accounting standards and firm processes. Support hiring by screening candidates, running technical interviews, and onboarding new team members. Client Work Own a portfolio of more complex Canadian client files — full-cycle bookkeeping, GST/HST, payroll, and year-end preparation. Prepare and review month-end and year-end working papers, including accruals, prepaids, and adjusting journal entries. Review GST/HST filings, payroll remittances, and other compliance work prepared by your team. Support year-end engagements (T1, T2, and compilations) prepared for review by Canadian CPAs. Be the escalation point when a team member is stuck or a file needs senior judgment. Process & Communication Document and improve internal processes. If something is being done badly, you fix it. Communicate with Canadian leadership clearly and proactively — flagging risks, blockers, and opportunities. Communicate with clients directly when needed, especially on technical or sensitive matters. What We're Looking For Qualification: MBA in Finance from a recognized institute, OR CA Intern (CA Inter cleared, CA Final candidate, or articleship completed) from ICAI. Public accounting experience. You have worked in a public accounting firm and managed multiple clients in parallel. You understand how a practice runs. Strong QuickBooks Online experience. You are independent in QBO — chart of accounts, bank feeds, reconciliations, journal entries, reporting, and review of others' work in QBO. Demonstrated leadership or senior responsibility — formal team lead experience, or consistent ownership of junior staff and review work. Strong sense of timelines and deadlines. You manage your own portfolio and your team's portfolio without being chased. Self-learner. Canadian accounting will be new in some respects. You can learn from documentation, CRA guidance, and self-directed research, and you can teach what you have learned to your team. Strong problem solver. When something is off, you investigate, form a hypothesis, and propose a solution. You teach your team to do the same. Initiative. You see what needs doing and do it. You do not wait to be told. Excellent written and spoken English. You will communicate regularly with Canadian leadership and, over time, directly with clients. Reliable home setup for remote work — stable internet, quiet workspace, and a computer suitable for accounting work.
